What happens inside each session

The details, in plain English

01 · Haven't borrowed yet

Borrow with your eyes wide open

Taking on student loans is one of the biggest financial decisions you'll ever make — and most students sign the paperwork without fully understanding what they're committing to.

In our one-hour strategy session, we'll walk through how your loans will work, what they'll actually cost you over time, and how to build a repayment plan that fits your real income and real life. Together we'll set a “safe-to-borrow” threshold based on your expected earnings and living expenses — a guardrail that keeps future payments from compromising your goals.

Included in your session

  • One-hour borrowing strategy session
  • Projected debt-to-income analysis
  • School & program ROI evaluation
  • A personal “safe-to-borrow” threshold
  • Federal vs. private loan trade-offs
  • Repayment scenarios before you commit

02 · One borrower, one income

Managing loans on one income

Managing student loan debt on a single income is one of the most financially demanding positions a borrower can be in. Your session covers a complete loan profile review — types, servicers, rates, balances — and identifies every repayment plan available to you.

We'll assess eligibility for forgiveness programs including PSLF and Teacher Loan Forgiveness, calculate the potential tax liability of forgiven amounts, and build a sustainable strategy that avoids the common mistakes: missed recertification deadlines, untracked qualifying payments, and plans that don't fit your income.

Included in your session

  • One-hour comprehensive loan review
  • Every repayment plan you qualify for
  • PSLF & forgiveness eligibility check
  • Forgiveness tax-liability projection
  • Refinancing viability assessment
  • 30 days of follow-up email support

03 · Married, one spouse has loans

Smarter planning for married borrowers

Marriage fundamentally changes student loan strategy — combined income, tax filing decisions, and income-sharing laws all affect your monthly payment. The difference between filing jointly and filing separately can translate into thousands of dollars a year.

Your session includes a side-by-side “Married Filing Jointly vs. Married Filing Separately” analysis with your actual household numbers, community-property rules applied where they help, monthly payment comparisons across every income-driven plan, and a strategy mapped for unequal-income households.

Included in your session

  • One-hour review of your household picture
  • MFJ vs. MFS side-by-side tax analysis
  • Community-property state rules applied
  • Payment comparison across all IDR plans
  • Forgiveness timelines & deduction impact
  • 30 days of follow-up email support

04 · Both spouses have loans

When both of you carry the debt

When both spouses carry student loan debt, standard repayment advice falls short. Consolidating the wrong loans at the wrong time can disqualify you from PSLF or reset your IDR forgiveness clock — coordination is critical.

We'll examine both partners' loan profiles together, identify the repayment combination that lowers your collective obligation, verify PSLF qualification status, and structure a strategy that maximizes forgiveness for the qualifying spouse while optimizing repayment for the other. You'll leave with a single, clear plan that aligns both partners' loans, income, tax strategy, and forgiveness eligibility.

Included in your session

  • One-hour review of both loan profiles
  • Coordinated dual-borrower strategy
  • MFJ vs. MFS analysis for both borrowers
  • PSLF optimization for qualifying spouse
  • Income weighting across both profiles
  • 30 days of follow-up email support

Common questions

Before you book

Sessions are educational consultations focused on your student loan strategy. Kathleen is a CFP® professional and CSLP®, and she'll bring full financial-planning context to your situation — but sessions are not investment, legal, or tax advice. For guidance specific to those areas, consult the appropriate licensed professional.

It's based on complexity. Haven't borrowed yet? Pre-Debt Plan. You're the only borrower? Single Borrower. Married and your spouse has no loans? Married Borrower. Both of you carry loans? Dual Debt. The 30-second matcher on this page will point you to the right one.

Your loan details (a studentaid.gov download works great), your most recent tax return, and a rough picture of household income. You'll get a short intake form when you book so Kathleen can prepare before the call.

A clear, personalized action plan — which repayment plan to choose, how to file, what to do about forgiveness, and the exact next steps — plus 30 days of follow-up email support for questions that come up as you execute.

Fees are based on complexity, not upsells. Adding a spouse — and especially a second loan portfolio — multiplies the analysis: tax filing scenarios, community-property rules, two forgiveness clocks. You only pay for the depth your situation actually requires.
